Zika Virus in Mumbai

Know about its Warning signs, symptoms, and prevention tips...

The first Zika virus case has been identified in Mumbai's Chembur, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The affected person is a 79-year-old guy who exhibited symptoms like fever, coughing, and a stuffy nose. The Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also spreads diseases like dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, and West Nile virus, is the carrier of the Zika virus.

While many people who get the Zika virus do not exhibit any symptoms, other people may have fever, rash, joint discomfort, conjunctivitis, and muscle soreness.

The elderly, women who are pregnant, people with cancer and diabetes, people on immunosuppressive drugs, people who need dialysis, and people with HIV are particularly susceptible to serious infections and extended sickness.

The Zika virus can cause organ failure and neurological issues if untreated or if the infection lasts. Seizures, mental state changes, encephalitis, and problems with the nerves are just a few of the symptoms that can appear.

The zika virus is a mosquito-borne disease that has drawn attention due to its quick spread and significant health dangers, especially for pregnant women and their unborn children. Aedes mosquitoes, which are also responsible for the spread of dengue and chikungunya, are the main vectors for the virus.

Fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes) are a few of the more common moderate Zika virus symptoms.

Since symptoms of the virus might be confused with those of other prevalent ailments, many infected individuals might not even be aware that they have received the disease. The virus's association with birth abnormalities, particularly microcephaly (an abnormally tiny head size in babies), has raised a lot of alarm, though.

In order to control the spread of the Zika virus, prevention is essential. Avoiding mosquito bites is crucial if one wants to protect themselves.

Insect repellent, long sleeves, and bed nets can all help you do this, especially during the day when Aedes mosquitoes are most active. Another important preventive measure is to get rid of standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
