World Menopause Day 2023

What foods should be avoided during menopause?

World Menopause Day is observed annually on October 18th with the aim of increasing awareness about menopause, an important topic that should be discussed openly, regardless of gender. In the contemporary world, there's a prevailing discomfort in discussing matters such as menstruation and menopause openly.

World Menopause Day also serves as an opportunity to educate women about the support services that can enhance their health and overall well-being. It encourages professionals and women to take part in a worldwide awareness campaign to help shed light on this important subject.

On World Menopause Day 2023, let's explore the Menopause diet, including foods that can be beneficial, and those that should be avoided during this phase.

1. Don't eat processed foods like chips and cookies; they can cause bloating because of their high sodium and added sugar content.

2. Stay away from spicy foods, as the spiciness can trigger hot flashes, excessive sweating, and flushing in menopausal women.

3. Steer clear of junk foods, especially since menopausal women are already at a higher risk of heart disease. These unhealthy foods are high in fats, which can lead to weight gain and exacerbate menopausal symptoms.

4. Consuming more than five glasses of alcohol daily increases the risk of breast cancer in women and can also trigger menopausal symptoms. Caffeine intake raises the risk of hot flashes, particularly in women who consume caffeinated drinks. Substitutes for hot caffeinated beverages include green tea, peppermint tea, and caffeine-free options.

5. Avoid fatty meats like brisket and bacon, as they can reduce serotonin levels, leading to irritability. Opt for leaner options like chicken, turkey, or ground beef that's 90 percent lean or leaner.
