Playback Singer Uma Ramanan Passes Away

Demise Occurs in Chennai


Indian playback singer Uma Ramanan, known for her contributions to Tamil cinema, passed away on May 1 at the age of 72. Survived by her husband, singer AV Ramanan, and son Vignesh Ramanan, her cause of death remains undisclosed. Further information about her funeral arrangements is pending.

Uma Ramanan, a classically trained singer, graced over 6,000 concerts spanning 35 years. Her partnership with musician AV Ramanan began when they met, leading to collaborative efforts in his concerts. However, it was her collaboration with Ilaiyaraaja that brought her widespread recognition, despite having sung numerous songs for her husband.

Uma Ramanan's rendition of 'Poongathave Thaal Thiravai' in the Tamil film "Nizhalgal" served as a breakthrough, elevating her career significantly. This notable performance paved the way for her collaboration with Ilaiyaraaja, resulting in over 100 songs together. Beyond Ilaiyaraaja, she lent her voice to compositions by Vidyasagar, Mani Sharma, and Deva, showcasing her versatility and talent.

Some of Uma Ramanan's notable songs with Ilaiyaraaja include 'Bhoopalam Isaikkum' from 'Thooral Ninnu Pochchu', 'Aanandha Raagam' from 'Panneer Pushpangal', 'Kanmani Nee Vara' from 'Thendrale Ennai Thodu', 'Ponn Maanae' from 'Oru Kaidhiyin Diary', 'Aagaya Vennilave' from 'Arangetra Velai', and 'Sri Ranga Ranganathanin' from 'Mahanadi'.

Uma Ramanan made her singing debut in 1977 with the film 'Sri Krishna Leela', where she sang a duet with her husband, AV Ramanan.

Uma Ramanan's final song was 'Kannum Kannumthan Kalandaachu' from Vijay's 'Thirupaachi'. This track, composed by Mani Sharma, featured her alongside Harish Raghavendra and Premji Amaren.
